Name:
Spike T Lion – Athletics Mascot Extraordinaire
DOB:
That’s a good question. I’m old enough to go to events by myself, but young enough to enjoy a good sprint around the track!
Likes:
The GB & NI team, my German pen pal Berlino Bear, practising my own starts when the gun goes off, dancing to great music, the British Athletics Supporters Club and huge great big balls of wool (well we all have our childish fun every now and then). Most importantly, meeting my fans!
Dislikes:
Very noisy starter guns, quarantine rules that stop me travelling overseas with the GB & NI team, music I can’t move to.
Goals:
To inspire all my friends and fellow athletes to get involved in athletics – whether that is by having fun at Major Events, helping you to aim for higher UKA Awards, encouraging youngsters to try Startrack schemes. There’s so much I want to do!
Hi,
I’m Spike, that’s Spike T Lion to business colleagues but Spike to all my friends.
You may well have seen me at UKA Major Events? There’s nothing I like best then getting right close up to the action and meeting my favourite athletes on the circuit. 2012 is a massive year for athletics and I hope you will be taking part as well as watching!
That could be helping you to find a local Startrack scheme, or if you are an organiser, helping you through the process to set one up!
If you are a teacher then I’d love to tell you all about Elevating Athletics – quite simply the base of all sports lessons – if you are a young athlete then I need you to tell your teacher about Elevating athletics as it could make your PE lessons even more fun!
As a lion of considerable talents there is nothing I like more than honing my expertise at my favourite pastimes, running, jumping and throwing. It’s because of this that I have devised the Awards a brilliant way for young athletes like myself to measure their performance within school PE lessons and gain rewards the faster, higher and further we go!
Then as you get really good at your chosen event, it might be time to measure yourself again the best in other schools. Therefore ask your teachers how to get involved in Schools athletics where you might be able to represent your school or County at one of the great Schools Championships events!
Of course the great thing about athletics in schools is that you can take part in it all year round. This year I went and watched the Sportshall finals take place at the National Indoor Arena. I love Sportshall as it’s great way to take part in athletics during the winter months – after all like many other parts of the cat family, I’m not a fan of getting too wet!
And if you are an aspiring young Paralympic athlete looking for ways to really make waves in athletics, then Parallel Success is a great way of finding out how to access classification sessions, source high level competition, or simply to find a great coach who can help you to develop your talents!
Be athletic, Do athletics!
