World Marathon Challenge
Summer 2012 has been a memorable one for the sport of athletics in the UK, particularly with the success of Mo Farah winning double Olympic gold! The Aviva Athletics Academy is now working hard to inspire the next generation of athletes.
A major part of this initiative is our support of the World Marathon Challenge on 16th October 2012 in aid of Save the Children. Not only is this a great opportunity to take part in the biggest children’s running event in the world and experience endurance running in a team format, but it also raises awareness of the fight against world hunger.
World Marathon Challenge:
With the success of Mo Farah at London 2012, endurance running has never had a higher profile, and UK Athletics are encouraging schools across the country to take part in the global World Marathon Challenge 2012 on 16th October 2012, in aid of Save the Children.
The World Marathon Challenge is a simultaneous relay in which teams of 11 to 13-year-olds from across the globe race against each other over the full marathon distance. Teams of 30 (boys and girls) run 26.2 miles in 200m relays, aiming to beat the Marathon World Record of 2 hours 3mins and 38 seconds held by Patrick Makau. All you need is a school field, or open space to set out a relay course.
2011 saw over 2000 children from around the world taking part, and following London 2012, we are looking for even more schools and children to join in, as we inspire a generation to take part in athletics. For full details, and to get your school involved, please click here.
Why not use Endurance Awards to measure your pupils achievement?
As Mo Farah left the Games with 2 gold medals, why not reward your pupils for their athletic achievement with Academy Awards. The Endurance Award is a fantastic way to measure pupils personal bests in athletics, and create a competitive buzz around athletic achievement. Endurance Awards are easy to use within a PE session, and are a great way to encourage participation in athletics. You can download tables, scoresheets and purchase awards badges and certificates by clicking here.
